The best and cheapest Phone Plan for me

“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated while ignoring the noise around you! “

As you remember, I switched my mobile plan from Maxis to U mobile last year after being a loyal Maxis customer for almost 25 years.

My old Maxis bill

I used to spend MYR230 per month for 3 phone lines I subscribed to Maxis. Switching to U mobile last year was a wise decision because I managed to save extra MYR 50 per month and basically U mobile offers unlimited data and calls ( GX68 plan). Since I switched from Maxis to U mobile, I was offered a reduced rate of MYR58 per month.

Frankly I have no complaint using U Mobile, the coverage in the hospital and my housing area is good.

Recently I learned about a new mobile plan from my son.

He will be going back to school soon. Having a phone with data is considered essential now and he hopes I could get him a mobile plan.

The best and cheapest phone plan

He told me about Yoodo and how I could customize my mobile plan according to my need. Just in case you have not heard of Yoodo, it is the first telecommunications provider in Malaysia that allow users to custom their own mobile plan.

When I look at my month U mobile plan, I pay about MYR63-64 per month ( after adding 6% SST) for each line, three lines cost me about MYR189.

The problem is I seldom make phone call and I hardly use handphone data while working. Most of the time, only nurses call me through my phone and I only use WIFI at home.

I was in shock when I look through my U Mobile bill because I hardly call anyone ( I made less than 50 calls per month and the talk time is less than 100 mins) and only use 3-4 GB of data a month ( after purposely use my mobile data at home most evenings after work since it is unlimited).

My U mobile bill

My wife and mother are both using only 4-5GB of mobile data every month and my wife makes less than 20 calls per month. So it might be a good idea for me to switch my phone plan again!

You can customize your own plan

Yes, Yoodo gives you the flexibility of customizing your own mobile plan based on 3 things.

  1. Data (GB)- starting from as low of MYR 12 for a 2GB plan
  2. Voice ( Mins)- starting from MYR 5 for a 100-minute talk time
  3. SMS -starting for as low as MYR3 for 50 SMS

Since Yoodo is provided by Celcom, make sure your housing area and work place have good coverage before you decide to switch.

So basically, you can tailor your mobile plan based on your usage. Spend some times browsing through your previous bills and decide which combination is the best for you.

yoodo mobile plan

This is the most basic plan, it costs you only MYR20 per month, by giving away SMS( I don’t think anyone uses SMS anymore nowaday), you can go for a plan as low as MYR17!

Other Extra Add-ons

After deciding the above three basic needs, you can add in some extra services as below,

If you are a heavy user of certain online services such as YouTube or Netflix, it might be a good idea to add in these extra add-ons because it only costs you MYR 7 for 20GB of data ( an extra 20 GB data will set you back another MYR 17- 20 instead of only MYR 7!)

For those who play online games, it is insanely FREE to get 20 GB of PUBG Mobile via Yoodo app. Another good thing to note is extra 20GB of data for watching TikTok only costs extra MYR1 per month.

My Customised Mobile Plan

After going through my family phone bills for the last three months, I decided for the following plans,

1) My mobile plan: Data 10 GB, Talk time: 200 mins, SMS: 50 , Total MYR 28 per month ( I am likely to change my plan to a talk time of 100 mins in future.)

2) My wife’s mobile plan : Data 10 GB, Talk time :100 mins, SMS: 50, Total MYR 26 per month

3) My mum’s mobile plan: Data 10 GB, Talk time : 200 mins, SMS: 0, Total MYR 25 per month

4) My son’s mobile plan: Data 10 GB, Talk Time: 100 mins, SMS: 0, Total MYR 23 per month

Total phone bills per month: MYR 102

It is wonderful to know that now I spend MYR 102+ ( + another extra 6 percent SST) instead of MYR 189. I save another MYR 80 per month!

And the best part is my son is joining the family club of having mobile data plan now. It makes my life easier to contact him at school and hopefully soon in college.

My Future Plan

I am planning to fix a Time broadband in my mum’s house so that she can have high quality Wifi at home. My mum stays at home most of the time and use internet only to watch video online ( such as YouTube). After fixing Time, I could further reduce her Yoodo mobile data to 2 GB.

This customized plan only costs MYR 19 per month. Therefore at the end of the day, I might only pay MYR195+ for all 4 mobile plans plus Time 100 Mbps broadband ( MYR 99 per month).

Remember that I used to pay MYR 230 for my Maxis bills ( 3 lines with a combined mobile data of only 10 GB!!)

It will make life easier for my kids when they want to study online at my mum’s place. Modern kids basically couldn’t survive one day without internet access.

Yoodo is Good for you only if….

Yoodo is certainly not for everyone, it is a good plan if you are not a heavy user of mobile data ( more than 10 GB per month) and you are a quiet person and do not talk much like me.

If you are a heavy user of mobile data, stick to your unlimited mobile data plan!

A few things to note before switching and after switching

Before switching, do your home work, make sure you are not a heavy user and your neighbourhood has good coverage. Settle all bills of your current telco and remember to select ‘keep my number’ during the sign up process!

You will receive your physical SIM card within 1 day if you live in Klang Valley and about 3-4 days outside of Klang Valley. ( unless you opt for express delivery by paying a fee.)

Once you have activated your SIM, remember to answer a simple SMS question ‘ YES’ or ‘NO’ to confirm your intention to switch from your previous telco to Yoodo. The portability process usually takes 1-3 days.

After portability process is successful, you need to insert the new SIM card to your phone. However, do remember that you might not be able to receive SMS/TAC/ Authorization code from your banks, brokerage account for 24 hours if you plan to do online transaction. I am not sure why this glitch happens.

  1. I remember the hassle I went through changing from Maxis to Digi early this year. Maxis reps would call me daily and offer lower rates for 2 months but hiding the fact that there will be a 2 year contract.

    • Dear Jimmy,
Yes, I must say I hate Maxis so much! But I might want to switch my home UNIFI to Maxis soon since Maxis offers a cheaper alternative and I can say I hate UNIFI more than Maxis.:-)
